WWOOF - World Wide Opportunities On Organic Farms

Inside the WWOOFers' Lodge at Sedlescombe
WWOOF is an exchange: in return for our work on organic farms, gardens and smallholdings (full time and quite hard), we receive meals, accommodation and, if necessary, transport to and from the local station.

WWOOF aims:
  • To get first-hand experience of organic farming and growing
  • To get into the countryside
  • To help the organic movement which is labour-intensive and does not rely on artificial fertilizers for fertility or persistent poisons for pest control
  • To make contact with other people in the organic movement
  • How it operates

Details of places throughout the UK needing help each weekend are listed in the newsletter, which is sent every two months. Members can then make bookings for the weekends or days of their choice and, if a place is available, will receive full details including travel information. The newsletter also gives details of events, developments, training and job opportunities in the organic movement and includes members' contributions and advertisements.

A detailed "Fix-It-Yourself" list of WWOOF places in the UK and overseas is available to members who have satisfactorily completed at least two scheduled weekends, so that they can make their own arrangements to work, possibly for longer periods. Special arrangements can usually be made for those unable to complete two scheduled weekends.

A list of similar organisations overseas (including Ireland) is available on receipt of SAE.

    The Organisation

This is carried out by volunteers and is non-profit making. Offers of help are always welcome so that the work may be fairly shared and to allow WWOOF to expand.

Social get-togethers are held from time to time so that we can meet one another and discuss the running of WWOOF

    Children and WWOOF

Some farms are prepared to take children, and feeding and supervision arrangements are agreed between the WWOOF member and the host beforehand.

Equipment: You need your own sleeping bag, weatherproof clothing, work gloves and boots.
