If you like wine, you’ll love Sedlescombe! This is a truly authentic working vineyard experience where you can explore the Self-guided Trail through 3 vineyards and an ancient English woodland - all set in the 'High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty'. Following this informative and invigorating stroll you and your partner head back to see the winery, where the grapes get transformed into wine. Then you pop next door to the 'Bar-in-the Barn' to indulge yourself with a tutored tasting of 6 of the finest English Wines – some of which have won international gold medals and featured recently in The Times and other national media.
This is your chance to admire the work of one of the UK's true eco-pioneers - the grandfather of organic viticulture, Roy Cook. Not only did Roy start the first organic vineyard in England back in 1979, but in 2010, Sedlescombe became the first vineyard to release 'Biodynamic' English Wine, an organic method of production that even incorporates lunar rhythms into grape growing. You will unravel some of the mysteries of biodynamic growing from the information boards and leaflet as you walk around.
Designed so that the vineyards are in tune with the earth's rhythms, biodynamic methods are enjoying a revival world-wide says Roy. 'Many of the early pioneering organic vineyards of the 80's have transitioned to biodynamic as a move against the standardisation of wines around the world and a return to 'terroir' where wines of different regions are distinct from other regions' and truly reflect their place of origin.
You can choose from a range of tours, some of which require pre-booking. But for the Self-guided trail you just turn–up at the new car park with easy access off the B2244 road and get your Trail Leaflet from the Shop. There are some wellies available for if the grass is wet, or if you wish to not get your shoes dirty - and off you go!
A fun way to spend an afternoon and find out more about eco-friendly wine production and taste wines you can really write home about!
In June 2016 Sedlescombe became the first English vineyard to win outright an International wine competition when their Regent Rosé beat 61 other wines from 8 countries to clinch Top Gold with 97 points! Back in 2013 Sedlescombe gained an International award for their 2011 Regent Red, the first English RED to gain recognition beyond these shores.
