Priced at £69.95 a bottle this is probably the most expensive English wine ever! Why so expensive? How can a price like this be justified? Quite simply, because this wine made history - it rocked the wine world.
Previously no-one thought that England could produce a decent red wine. So when this wine became the first English red to win an international award, beating 53 other wines from the more established wine regions of the world in the process, it bacame quite a talking point. So much so that it was featured in The Times on 16th June 2013 and the next day on BBC TV South East today.
Another history making point is that this Sedlescombe 2011 Regent red is the first biodynamic English red. So this remarkable wine is worth every penny as it represents a groundbreaking moment in the history of English Wine and could be stored and then auctioned at a substantial profit in years to come - if you can resist drinking it, that is!
How does it taste? Here's our description written shortly after bottling in 2013. A colleague of mine who collects fine wines, tasted the wine again in November 2014 and described the wine as "gaining in complexity and still developing". Here are my 2013 tasting notes:
"A ripe, smooth and full-bodied red from this superb vintage. Non-chapitalized and matured in barrique oak barrels. Smokey, fruity aromatics. Robust blackcurrant, raspberry and cherry fruit palate with ample tannin. Quite complex."
Regent produces excellent fruit for red wine enabling us to produce a hot climate style of red in our cool northerly climate. We hand pick only the best bunches for this red and then de-stalk and crush and ferment 'on-the-pulp' for 10 days. 12% vol. 75cl bottle.
We made just 92 cases of this wine, by May 2016 only a dozen cases remain. This wine makes an ideal gift for someone special: a partner, parent or wine lover.
